Karakul Board History

Establishment
On 22 November 1982 in compliance with Government Notice 166 of 1982 the KARAKUL PELTS AND WOOL ACT (Act 14 of 1982) was promulgated to establish the Karakul Board of Namibia, determine its goals, powers, activities and duties and make provision for relevant matters.

The goals and functions of the Karakul Board are:

1. to develop the karakul industry to its full potential, maintain its viability and stability and promote its interests;

2. to devise and pursue an effective strategy to increase the demand for karakul pelts and wool or products made thereof;

3. to promote the establishment of a processing and manufacturing industry for karakul pelts and wool in Namibia and do research in this regard;

4. to cooperate as a partner or otherwise with any body engaged in marketing, manufacturing or distribution for sale of karakul pelts or wool;

5. to advise the Minister on all matters with regard to the production, marketing and processing of karakul pelts and wool.
